I’m going to be saying stuff like that a lot, just to warn you. Singing songs about soup, telling you how to calm a llama down… of course it’s probably funnier in context:
I’ve discovered the Mighty Boosh! And my life will never be the same. Fortunately Scarecrow Video has two seasons plus a live DVD, as I’ve already exhausted YouTube’s collection of videos.
Other inspiring British YouTube video while we’re on the subject:
I watch this every time I need cheering up. I recommend you do the same.
So what have I been doing since my return from France, besides rediscovering British television via the internet?
Well,
- I applied to a bunch of lab technician jobs
- No one hired me, my B.Sci is useless
- I worked a 2 week job cleaning rat cages at Fred Hutch
- My B.Sci is worse than useless
- I applied to a bunch of baking jobs
- I got hired! I am now a candy cook downtown and probably will be making Yiddish pastries on the side
- My hobby saved me!!!!
In celebration of my desert-baking obsession being a hotter commodity on the job market than say, what, 4 grueling years of studying biology, I made some pies:
I give you:
1. Fugly Apple Pie

Still delicious, and somehow became much less fugly in the oven…the pastry was a beast to work with for some reason, hence the sad, irregular, and v. chunky “lattice” top (“rustic” was what jessie generously termed it) but plopped some ice cream on the top and it was heavenly
2. Tangy Blueberry Pie

Well not too tangy but we ran out of lemons so I zested and juiced a grapefruit instead, and the flavor was really complimentary. Try it sometime! Cheesy patriotic top idea courtesy of Martha Stewart. Blah. I was going to use a moon cookie cutter and make it look like kind of like fish scales but my moon cookie cutter has a nose on it and would have looked bizarr-o.
Because everything connects back to the Mighty Boosh, here is their version of a dramatic Russian play involving pies:
And if you find this funny at all look for their soup song and tundra rap.
Soup, soup, a tasty soup, soup, a spicy carrot and corriander!
yeah, I warned you.
Huzzah! She is back! Not only back in the US but also back blogging!
I am relieved.
I think the blueberry pie looks amazing. Keep on auditioning. I might hire you to bake me pies!
